The quality of camera phone video is amazing.
However, capturing the action is best practiced before the game. If you will be capturing video during a season, I suggest using a one handed gimbal for ease of use and video stability. They are not terribly expensive and range in price from $70 to $200. They require some getting use to. Don't wait till the game to learn how to use a gimbal. Practice first.
There are some do's and dont's depending on the sport you will be recording. See the tips section. The quickest turnaround for video creation is you curating the clips to be highlighted prior to submittal, that way you are in complete control of the story to be told.
For example, football. Start and end recording after each play allowing yourself enough pre and post roll as coaches want to see the action before and after the play. If your child plays both offense and defense, curate the clips accordingly. More than two people will be interested in the appropriate footage. The Head Coach, OC, DC, position and recruiting coaches are all different people.
As well, do you keep the camera on your athlete, or the action down field. You will be watching the game through a 5x7 window. You will have to be disciplined to capture your athletes action and the game action, they both can tell the story at times.
For continuous action sports such as basketball, hockey, or soccer, record till there is a break in the action. Providing timestamps for the footage to be included in the reel will be necessary. You will need to be creative and on your toes to capture your athlete and the play on field. Remember the goal is to capture your athletes highlights especially when they are making the play.
Yes you have to curate the footage, it's the best way to tell your athlete's story. Otherwise if we do it, we'll charge you more money and we don't know your child as well as you do.
The length of each video will be from 2 to 5 minutes, 6 tops depending on content and frequency. Remember coaches are inundated with film. The AMS service is built on how you want to message prospective colleges, what is your "drip marketing campaign" for messaging schools. (See drip marketing campaigns in the FAQs for more information and how to's.)
It should depend on the athlete. For example, If you have a stud of a football player going both ways and makes plays up and down the field every game, you will want a per game package, but may elect to mail the prospect schools every week to two weeks. You'll want to adjust your messaging depending on your athletes highlights. You'll want to provide salient, timely, new information, not just because we had a game. As well, if your athlete is demonstrating improvement in a specific skillset over time, you'll want to highlight that as well. If your athlete has less than that in highlights you may want to compile a reel to send every three weeks to a month.
